About the seminar

Welcome to the Centre for East Asian Studies’ seminar Comparing Notes between Finland and Taiwan on Disinformation and Hybrid Threats.

This seminar brings together experts in diplomacy, hybrid threats, and cybersecurity research to discuss contemporary challenges related to disinformation, societal resilience, and cyber and hybrid threats. Drawing on perspectives from Taiwan and Finland, the seminar addresses practical and analytical approaches to countering disinformation, understanding hybrid threat activity, and examining the role of emerging technologies such as AI in shaping information environments.

We are especially pleased to welcome Mr. Freddy Lim, Representative of Taiwan to Finland.

Speakers

Freddy Lim

Taipei Representative Office in Finland

Freddy Lim is Taiwan’s Representative to Finland. He is also widely known as a musician and public figure in Taiwan, including as the lead vocalist of the metal band Chthonic. Before his diplomatic post, he served in Taiwan’s Legislative Yuan and was active in civil society and human rights work, including as chair of Amnesty International Taiwan.

His talk will address Taiwan’s experience in countering disinformation, strengthening societal resilience, and responding to cyber and hybrid threats.

Dr. Jukka Aukia

Hybrid CoE

Jukka Aukia is a Senior Analyst at the European Centre of Excellence for Countering Hybrid Threats. He holds a PhD in Asian Studies from the University of Turku and a master’s degree in Asian Studies from the University of Amsterdam. Previously, he worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the Centre for East Asian Studies, University of Turku.

Ismayil Hasanov

University of Turku and TurkuSec

Ismayil Hasanov is a doctoral researcher in Cyber Security Engineering at the University of Turku and the chairperson of TurkuSec ry, the Information Security Association of Turku. His work focuses on cybersecurity, AI, and the risks and biases emerging in large language models and related systems.

At the seminar, he will speak on biases and disinformation in AI models.

Jussi Tuovinen

Lieutenant Colonel, Defence Command Finland

Jussi Tuovinen is Branch Lead of Information Management and Security in Defence Command Finland. He has 30 years of experience in national defence across several domains, with a particular emphasis on intelligence and cyber.

He will speak about the similarities and differences between cybersecurity, cyber defence at the national level, and about how companies are involved.
